One of Britain’s greatest fashion exports – Paul Smith – grew up in Nottingham. He opened his first store here in 1970. Today, the city remains at the heart of his fashion empire. Sir Paul opened his UK flagship store in Middle Pavement in 2004. The grade II listed, five-floor building is worth visiting for the architecture as well as the clothes. Hugo Boss can be found a five-minute walk away on St Peter’s Gate. Known for its clean lines and tailored business wear, this is well worth a visit for those who like their fashion classic and elegant. On the walk down Bridlesmith Gate you’ll pass Kurt Geiger shoes, stocking the latest styles from Marc Jacobs, Carvela and Sonia Rykiel. Flannels (Bridlesmith Gate) and Limeys (Wheeler Gate) are also good for designer brands, the former stocking Prada, Versace and Jill Sander, and the latter home to the likes of Duffer, Burberry, Polo and Armani.
